EDA hears community programming and local government updates; telework center receives certificate of occupancy

KING AND QUEEN COURT HOUSE, Va. — At its Oct. 17 meeting the King and Queen County Economic Development Authority received staff updates about community programming, library services and several county facility and planning milestones.
Erin Lazar said staff have stepped up efforts to be more visible in local media, reported about 250 people signed up for the county’s Regroup program, and noted that library card holders now have free access to the Times Dispatch and the Daily Press. Lazar also said the county’s LOVE sign project is underway although timing for installation is not yet finalized and she welcomed ideas for additional outreach.
Vivian Seay gave a local government update: the Comprehensive Plan review and an economic development section update are underway; the Board of Supervisors recently held a public hearing on truck restrictions for secondary roads between the courthouse area and Walkerton; and six proposals were received in response to the school master plan RFP, with the selection committee scheduled to meet the following week.
Seay added that the county’s telework center received its certificate of occupancy on the preceding Tuesday; furniture is expected to arrive in mid‑November, the PDC is scheduled to move in on Dec. 1 and Sentara is expected to move in January. The EDA’s participation slot at the Board retreat is tentatively scheduled for Friday the 15th at 11:00 a.m., a time Seay said the Board and EDA will use to set priorities for the coming years.
EDA members were asked to review the economic development section of the Comprehensive Plan so the authority can consider making a recommendation to the Director of Community Development at the November meeting.
