Lake Barcroft schedules spring dredging after equipment servicing and new clamshell purchase

The Lake Barcroft Water Improvement District reported that its heavy equipment — including a large excavator, a mini excavator, a backhoe and a large dump truck — has been serviced and is ready for the spring dredging season, the district said. The district also purchased a new clamshell bucket to off-load dredge spoils from hopper barges; staff will modify the new bucket in-house and retain the existing 14‑year‑old bucket as a backup.

The Operations Director told trustees the in‑house spring dredging season is scheduled to begin the first week of April and run through mid‑May, weather permitting. The initial work will focus on the Tripps Run side of the lake, with a target of dredging four days per week and reserving one day for other maintenance tasks.

Staff described recent preparatory work, including removal of debris from the lake and beaches, removal of a fallen tree, clearing overgrowth on Swift Island, cleaning debris off the dam’s catwalk and ordering leaf mulch from Fairfax County for the Lake Barcroft Association. The district also said it is preparing for the goose egg‑oiling season beginning in April and is conducting weekly surveys to locate nests and pairings.

District officials said routine small tasks for spring include clearing leaves and debris from drainage swales at Beaches 2 and 4, organizing equipment and materials at the decanting basins, and removing sand from the Beach 1 asphalt pathway. The district did not specify staffing or contractor details for dredging beyond current in‑house plans.
