County purchases land behind high school for potential consolidated elementary campus; RFPs underway

County staff told the Planning Commission Oct. 7 that King & Queen County purchased property behind the high school for a potential new elementary campus and that design RFPs are being received; the plan could consolidate two elementary buildings into one.
Vivan Seay, county administrator and county attorney, told the commission Oct. 7 that the county has purchased property behind the current high school for the construction of a new elementary school campus.
Seay showed commissioners a survey with aerial imagery and said requests for proposals for the campus design are being received. She said the plan is to build a facility that could house all elementary students if board of education officials opt to consolidate two existing elementary school buildings into a single campus.
No project cost, construction timeline or final enrollment decisions were recorded in the minutes; Seay said only that RFPs are coming in and that design proposals will be reviewed as they arrive.
The county has scheduled further discussion of capital projects as part of ongoing planning and budget conversations. The commission will next meet Nov. 4, 2024, when staff may provide updates.
