St. James council approves resolution to rename a street in 3-2 vote

The St. James City Council voted 3-2 on Nov. 19, 2024, to approve Resolution 11-24-05 authorizing Ordinance No. 025, 4th Series, which renames a street in St. James. Councilperson Gene Hildebrandt introduced the resolution and Councilperson Kathleen Hanson seconded; the ayes were Hildebrandt, Hanson and Councilperson Paul Harris, and the nays were Councilpersons Hannah Rushing and Sue Craig. Mayor Jonathan Wilson declared the resolution duly passed.
The ordinance had earlier received its second reading at the same meeting. Councilmembers did not record additional debate in the minutes; the record shows the hand vote for the second reading matched the later resolution vote. The resolution also authorized the ordinance’s title and summary for publication, a routine step toward formal adoption and public notice.
Alongside the renaming matter, the council handled routine business. On the consent agenda the council approved payment of claims totaling $296,766.44 (Checks No. 702991–703075) on a motion by Councilperson Gene Hildebrandt, seconded by Councilperson Paul Harris; Mayor Wilson declared that motion passed 5-0. The council also approved a Special Event Permit for the St. James Chamber of Commerce’s Winter Carnival scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024, on a motion by Councilperson Paul Harris, seconded by Councilperson Hannah Rushing; that voice vote was unanimous.
The council adopted RESOLUTION 11-24-06 to establish a social media policy after Councilperson Sue Craig introduced the resolution and Councilperson Paul Harris seconded; the hand vote was 5-0. Earlier in the meeting, Councilperson Hannah Rushing moved, and Councilperson Sue Craig seconded, approval of the Nov. 6, 2024 minutes; the motion passed 4-0-1 with Councilperson Paul Harris recorded as abstaining.
