Markesan Board of Review upholds assessment for 531 W John St; Rich Slate selected chair

The Markesan Board of Review convened June 4, 2026, at Markesan City Hall and selected Mayor Rich Slate to serve as chair. Ald. Pat Prill moved to select Slate as chair, Ald. Joseph Kazda seconded, and the motion carried unanimously (3-0).

Tamra M. Harrington, the city clerk/treasurer, told the board the meeting had been properly noticed in the Markesan Regional Reporter on April 30, 2026, and that she completed the Wisconsin Department of Revenue Board of Review training on June 4, 2026, as required by Wis. Stats. 70.46(4). Assessor Brian Frank of Frank Assessments, LLC, verified that the tax assessment roll was complete and that Open Book had been held.

For the record, one objection had been filed with the clerk’s office concerning the property at 531 W John St. The board initially adjourned at 5:18 p.m. to await the property owner’s appearance. The Board reconvened at 7:05 p.m. for the hearing on the objection; the property’s representatives were not present. Ald. Pat Prill moved, Ald. Joseph Kazda seconded, to deny the objection and uphold the assessor’s determination for 531 W John St. The motion carried 3-0.

After the hearing the board again adjourned until a property owner could appear and later reconvened at 7:16 p.m. No additional property owners appeared during the required two-hour session. Ald. Joseph Kazda moved, Ald. Pat Prill seconded, to adjourn the 2026 Board of Review; the motion carried 3-0 and the board adjourned at 7:16 p.m.

The clerk’s minutes record the times of the calls to order (5:16 p.m.), interim adjournment (5:18 p.m.), reconvening for the objection (7:05 p.m.), adjournment after hearing (7:11 p.m.), final reconvening (7:16 p.m.), and final adjournment (7:16 p.m.). No votes or actions altering assessments were approved other than the denial of the single filed objection; no owners or representatives were present for the objection hearing.
