Stephens City reports sidewalk repairs, sewer work and community events; town applies for tree-planting grant

At its Dec. 2 meeting Stephens City's Town Manager Mike Majher updated the council on local infrastructure repairs, school maintenance and community events.
Majher said the sidewalk repair in front of Black Shutter West has been completed to address a roughly 2-foot drop that made the corner hazardous; the property owner expressed approval. He reported that sewer repairs behind the old school are complete but that further inspection is planned: town staff intend to camera the line from Ravenwood Road to Locust Street after discovering a bellied pipe, sediment buildup and a disjointed connection during recent work. Majher identified the camera inspection location as the next likely repair site.
On school work, Majher said the town is catching up on USDA requirements after the federal shutdown and is working with Bob Wells on insulating the attic. A structural beam on the second floor is being reinforced to meet code and a restroom door entry was fixed to comply with the ADA. The town applied for a grant through the Department of Forestry to plant native species, part of broader tree-commission efforts to restore canopy and introduce native plantings.
Community notes: the Love in Action Food Pantry held a ribbon cutting on Nov. 14, which town officials said met with a positive community response, and Mi Ranchito 2 has opened, with Treasurer Steve Rickards praising the food and service. The town is partnering with Trinity Lutheran Church for the upcoming tree lighting, and Chief Copp reminded residents of holiday pet-safety precautions. Majher also reminded residents that water bills are past due and that town taxes are due this month.
What happens next: Public Works plans to camera the sewer run from Ravenwood Road to Locust Street to assess repairs needed; the council did not take formal action at the meeting on funding for that inspection in the minutes.
