Mackinac County commissioners adopt no-kill shelter policy, appoint member and hire part-time worker

At their July 10 meeting in St. Ignace, the Mackinac County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt a resolution from the county Animal Advisory Committee declaring the county animal shelter a no-kill facility. Commissioner John Kling read the committee's resolution aloud before the board approved it.

The action followed a packet item that included a letter from a contractor expressing dissatisfaction with the furnace bidding process at the shelter. The contractor's letter was entered into the record; the minutes do not record a board response to that complaint.

The board also accepted the resignations of Animal Advisory Committee members David Coven and Molly Paquin and appointed Melissa Jerzykowski to fill one vacancy. Commissioner Judy St. Louis-Scott said she wanted to add two members to the committee to replace the recent departures; the board noted one opening will be posted on the county website.

In a separate motion, commissioners approved hiring a part-time employee for the animal shelter to assist with operations. Both the appointment and the staffing motion were moved by Commissioner Austin Kimberling and approved unanimously.

The board did not specify compensation or hours for the new shelter position in the minutes. The next procedural steps recorded include posting the remaining committee vacancy on the county website and entering the contractor's letter and the committee resolution into the record.
