Hillsborough Conservation Commission schedules Shedd Brook work day and discusses trail marker signs

Chair Richard Head and commissioners heard from Jim Riddle, who reported that he and Shawna (Crosby) Caron have secured access to CAI Technologies’ property files and have cleaned up the commission’s conservation layer; Caron will send shapefiles of the town’s trails. Riddle identified the short trail north of Beard Brook beach and the Bible Hill cemetery trail as areas under review and recommended maintenance and possible trail expansion in Shedd Brook and Meeting Hill Woods. The commission agreed on June 1 at 10:00 a.m. for a volunteer work day; Recording Secretary John P. Segedy will post the event and Chair Richard Head will notify Mel Bennett of Life Forest.
Vice-Chair James McDonough briefed the group on signage needs, estimating about 12 posts will be required for markers. Commissioner Roger Shamel shared design mock-ups and pricing: shield-shaped signs at about $280 each and map signs priced at roughly $35 or $42 depending on size. Commission discussion focused on wording for the Confluence trail/conservation area and whether to give that area a separate name; members reached consensus to defer final design and wording decisions to a future meeting and to consider a kiosk-building work session.
Procedural actions taken during the meeting included approval of the April 22, 2025 minutes. Commissioner Jim Riddle moved to approve the minutes; Jim Narloch seconded. The motion carried 5-0-1, with Chair Richard Head recorded as abstaining. The meeting adjourned following a motion by Roger Shamel, seconded by Jim Narloch; that motion passed 6-0 at 8:10 p.m.
Chair Richard Head also noted that FEMA is updating its flood maps, an item commissioners said they would monitor for potential local impacts to trails and conservation parcels.
