The Columbus Plan Commission on August 14 voted to recommend that city council approve a conditional use permit and site plan for Core & Main’s proposed outdoor storage at the former bowling alley on Industrial Drive, with a condition that the storage area be fully enclosed by a privacy fence.
Mike (staff member) told the commission the applicant requested a 6-foot fence even though the industrial zoning allows up to a 10-foot fence. "He's really only looking for 6 feet," Mike said, and staff emphasized the ordinance requires the screening to be a privacy fence.
Commissioners asked whether adjacent trees would serve as adequate screening and whether stacked pipe could exceed the fence height. A committee member asked whether the applicant could apply for a variance if they later wanted taller screening; staff replied that a variance application would be available. Mike noted enforcement options if stored materials were stacked above the permitted height.
The Chair moved to recommend approval to council of the site plan and CUP as requested, with the additional condition that the fence entirely enclose the storage area; another committee member seconded the motion. The commission approved the recommendation by voice vote. The transcript records a voice vote but does not include an itemized tally of individual votes.
The commission’s recommendation will go to the Columbus city council for final action.
