Baldwin board approves $150,000 county grant agreement for Brookside playground; trustees, parents discuss funding gap

The Baldwin Union Free School District Board of Education voted to approve an intermunicipal agreement with Nassau County for a $150,000 community revitalization grant toward renovating the Brookside Elementary School playground. Board members approved the agreement and separately adopted a resolution classifying the renovation as a Type 2 action under Department of Environmental Conservation guidance.

District staff and the superintendent emphasized that approving the agreement is a step in the grant process and does not guarantee immediate receipt of funds. The board noted the county award would cover part of the estimated cost: the superintendent and trustees discussed a rough project estimate of about $300,000 and said the county’s $150,000 is roughly half of that figure. Trustees said the district would either secure additional funds, accept other grants or scale the project to match available funds if necessary.

During public comment, a community member (identified in the transcript as Vinay) asked whether PTAs or fundraising platforms such as GoFundMe could be used to close the funding gap. District staff cautioned that some PTA and grant rules impose restrictions; they described one approach used previously in which an independent nonprofit was formed to raise funds and later gifted the playground to the district so the district could assume maintenance and insurance responsibilities. Staff said the PTA should coordinate proposals with the district so officials can review any grant restrictions before commitments are made.

The board also approved the related environmental classification and a detailed playground renovation resolution. Next steps included awaiting authorization and release of grant funds from Nassau County and any further board action to accept additional donations or grants.
