Kenowa Hills Board approves curriculum purchase, handbook revisions, Kent ISD budget and device buy

Kenowa Hills Board of Education members on May 20 approved a package of routine business items, including a curriculum purchase, handbook revisions, the Kent ISD budget and a student-device purchase, during a meeting at the district high school commons.
The board voted 7-0 to purchase the TeachTown/Encore Comprehensive Functional Curriculum for $48,157.70 from the district’s General Fund, following a motion by Member Courtade and support from Member Hart as outlined in Report #24-034. Assistant Superintendent Dinkelmann presented the curriculum item as a second reading.
The board also approved recommended revisions to the K–12 student handbooks and the Athletic Code of Conduct (Report #24-035). The motion, made by Member Courtade and supported by Member Hart, carried 7-0; the board requested a further review of handbook language related to chronic absenteeism.
Member Hart moved and Member Courtade supported approval of the Kent Intermediate School District (Kent ISD) budget for fiscal year 2024–25 as presented in Report #24-036; the motion carried 7-0.
Separately, the board approved purchase of student devices not to exceed $377,350 to be funded from 2020 Series II Bond Funds (Report #24-037). Director of Finance Gilchrist was present for that item. The motion, moved by Member Hart and supported by Member Courtade, passed 7-0.
Earlier in the meeting the board approved a consent agenda that included the May 6 Committee of the Whole workshop minutes, the May 9 special meeting minutes and a certified staff report; that motion carried 7-0. The meeting had opened with a procedural vote to approve the agenda (motion carried 5-0).
The board listed a June 10 budget hearing and additional summer and fall meeting dates as next steps; no additional formal actions were taken on the curriculum, handbook or device purchases at the meeting.
