The Sweet Home Central School District presented its annual attendance procedures and wellness-plan update and recommended modest changes intended to increase family outreach and align school practice with state guidance.
District staff said the attendance procedures will add a first step: send a letter to families before scheduling an in-school conference, encouraging families to set up a meeting with building staff. The revised sequence becomes (1) a letter, (2) a conference scheduling request, (3) a formal conference if necessary, and (4) further interventions for chronic absenteeism. The administration noted that the district typically pursues home visits or referrals in more serious cases and that a 10-day absent threshold in a marking period triggers heightened intervention.
On wellness policy, staff proposed removing several named snack items that are discontinued from the district’s list of allowable classroom celebration foods and clarified that the district is pursuing more digital, translatable forms for attendance reporting to ease access for families.
Board members asked whether excuse forms will be fillable and whether translations would be available; staff said the district is working within PowerSchool/Enrollment Express to digitize and translate forms. No vote was recorded on substantive policy changes at the meeting; the updated documents were provided to the board for review.
