Mackinac County board creates restricted Child Care fund, appoints deputy medical examiner and approves hires, health codes and bills

At its May 12 meeting the Mackinac County Board of Commissioners approved a slate of administrative and fiscal actions, including creating a new restricted Child Care fund, appointing a deputy medical examiner, hiring staff and adopting updated health‑code language.
Commissioner Judy St. Louis‑Scott moved to create a separate restricted fund to hold the 10% Child Care allocation; Commissioner John Kling seconded the motion, which passed by roll call with Kling, Patrick, Schroeder and St. Louis‑Scott voting yes and Austin Kimberling absent. Juvenile Probation Officer Nick Adams explained the fund will carry its balance from year to year.
Clerk Hillary Vowell presented a letter from Medical Examiner Dr. Carl Hawkins recommending Dr. Bowes as Deputy Medical Examiner. Commissioner St. Louis‑Scott moved to appoint Dr. Bowes; Commissioner Daryl Schroeder seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The board also approved personnel moves recommended by staff: hiring John Cottenham Sr. to a full‑time maintenance position (pay grade 3, step 3, with accrued sick time transferred from the sheriff's office) and hiring Linda Maynard as Veterans Service Office assistant; both motions were approved by unanimous roll call.
LMAS Elizabeth Suggitt presented updated health codes containing language changes to sewer and well codes. After questions from Commissioners Patrick and Kling, Commissioner Daryl Schroeder moved to adopt the updated codes; Commissioner St. Louis‑Scott seconded and the board approved the update.
The board authorized up to $2,500 for purchase and installation of a flag pole at the Veterans Building; the motion passed unanimously. The board then approved regular bills of $89,552.92, manual bills of $9,698.99, additional bills of $2,068.09 and $368,980.32, and budget amendment #26‑13 for $30,000 and #26‑14 for smaller listed amounts; each motion carried by roll call with Commissioner Austin Kimberling absent.
