Select Board hiring motions for Highway Department candidates fail for lack of a second

Three separate motions to hire candidates for the Town of Jefferson’s vacant Highway Department laborer position failed for lack of a second during the Select Board’s Sept. 30 meeting.
Selectman Norman Brown first moved to hire Kevin Conway to a full-time position with a 90-day trial period; the motion received no second and died. Selectman Terri Larcomb then moved to hire Kyle Rines to a full-time position with a 90-day trial period; that motion also received no second and died. Selectman Brown subsequently moved to hire both Conway and Rines to part-time positions with equal hours and directed "Mike" to work with Administrative Assistant Amanda Simino so hours and pay would align with the budget; that motion likewise received no second and died.
Select Board Chair Kevin Meehan said a non-public discussion on the matter would be scheduled for the next meeting on Oct. 6. The meeting adjourned at 7:39 p.m. after a motion by Selectman Norman Brown, seconded by Selectman Terri Larcomb, which passed unanimously.
