The Town of Jefferson Select Board on Sept. 29 discussed multiple public-works items, including damage to Valley Road, work needed at the transfer station, and winter sand procurement.
Roads official Mike Kenison reported complaints about heavy trucks using Valley Road while powerline work was underway; he said he plans to wait until the crews finish before grading the road. The board asked Administrative Assistant Amanda Simino to monitor the situation and ensure needed repairs proceed once crews depart.
At the transfer station, board members were told two concrete slabs must be removed before a planned retaining wall can be poured because they are too thick to tie into the new wall. Selectman Norman Brown asked whether the slabs could be trimmed rather than removed; staff and the road agent said cutting would not work and removal is required. The board requested a quote from Bo and authorized pursuing removal this year; Road Agent Kenison said he will attempt removal with town equipment but may call Forrest Hicks if heavier equipment is needed.
Amanda said the winter sand quote from Carroll increased by $0.30 per ton from last year and that the town will need roughly 1,150 tons to remain within budget; Kenison said he will contact Carroll Concrete to place the order and staff are awaiting a salt quote. The board did not take an immediate vote to award contracts at the Sept. 29 meeting but gave staff direction to obtain quotes and proceed with procurement consistent with budget constraints.
