Hillsborough commission to notify homeowners over illicit sump-pump sewer hookups

The Town of Hillsborough Water & Sewer Commission agreed Dec. 11 to notify homeowners where sump pumps or drains were found connected to sewer services in the Park and Whittemore Street project area and to help connect those lines to newly installed drainage stubs.
Commissioner Dana Clow said the Commission should first send letters to property owners advising them of the regulation violation and requesting remediation. Administrator Penny Griffin said the Commission would provide that notice and that staff could assemble information property owners could use to correct connections.
Clow also suggested compiling a list of contractors that homeowners could contact to perform the disconnection and reconnection work. The Commission discussed that, once homeowners have the contractor and cost information, they can approach the Selectmen about possible financing options tied to the Park and Whittemore Street project.
No formal vote was recorded on a mandatory enforcement timeline; the Commission described the initial step as owner notification and information-sharing. The item will return to a future meeting after property-specific information and contractor options are assembled.
