Supervisory Special Agent Treggland of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New Orleans said partnerships among federal, state, local and private agencies are critical to keeping large public events safe, citing recent Super Bowl preparations, New Orleans Saints games and Mardi Gras as examples. "Partnership is very, very important," he said, adding, "it's one team."
Treggland, who identified himself as the FBI's special events coordinator in New Orleans, said different events pose different security challenges. He noted that a stadium-based event such as the Super Bowl is contained within a venue and requires attention to what enters the dome, while Mardi Gras covers a broad downtown area and presents a wider geographic footprint for planning and response.
He listed several recurring assignments that illustrate the range of his work, including professional football games and large-scale citywide celebrations. "No agency, no private company are more important than the other," Treggland said, arguing that each partner brings value to protecting attendees, residents and the city.
Treggland also shared a personal moment to underscore the local dimensions of the work: he described watching his family watch him perform his duties during the most recent Mardi Gras and walking parts of the route alongside colleagues from multiple agencies. He said he also had an opportunity to work briefly with his father, a retired New Orleans Police Department officer who remains with the department's reserve force, a memory he said he will "never forget."
Treggland concluded by restating his role with the FBI in New Orleans and the importance of continued interagency coordination for upcoming special events.
