Mackinac County board authorizes hiring process for school resource officer

Sheriff Ed Wilk told the Mackinac County Board of Commissioners on May 28 that St. Ignace Area Schools has requested a School Resource Officer and committed to funding 75% of the position’s cost, leaving the county responsible for roughly 25%.
Wilk said the new position would be housed in the Sheriff’s Office and that the officer would serve on county road patrol when school is not in session. He estimated startup costs at approximately $160,000, which include the purchase of a new patrol vehicle.
After questions from commissioners about duties and costs, Commissioner John Kling moved and Commissioner Judy St. Louis-Scott seconded a motion authorizing the sheriff to begin the hiring process. The board voted unanimously in favor: Kimberling, Kling, Patrick, Schroeder and St. Louis-Scott voted yes; no members voted no.
The board did not set a timetable for hiring or specify whether the county’s 25% share would be covered from general fund dollars or another account; commissioners requested additional details before finalizing funding sources.
