Chincoteague council approves FY26 budget calendar and trolley replacement plan

Town staff presented the FY26 budget calendar and a trolley budget plan at the council’s Jan. 8 meeting.
Mr. Talbert outlined the planned review schedule — Budget Personnel Committee meetings, a workshop meeting and regular-council consideration — culminating in a formal appropriation vote on May 5. Council approved the calendar and authorized staff to proceed.
Talbert and Transportation Director Billy King described the trolley grant program that typically covers roughly 73% of trolley operating costs and noted the grant application deadline is Feb. 1. They proposed replacing one older trolley, Stormy, with a new vehicle; Mr. Talbert said the town’s share of a replacement vehicle would be small (about 4% of cost in prior replacements) and asked council to approve the trolley budget for submission. The council voted to approve the trolley budget submission by voice vote. Talbert also said the staff proposes a modest hourly driver pay increase from $16 to $16.50.
The mayor and council thanked staff for preparing the schedule and supporting materials and moved on to other agenda items.
