The Albany Clerk told the Select Board on Aug. 27 that the town experienced minor fraudulent charges on a town credit card and that the usual response is to cancel the card, issue a replacement and pursue reimbursement through the card issuer.
"We did have some minor fraudulent charges, but the way they handle it is they just immediately cut your card, issue a new one, investigate the charges," the Clerk said, adding that when charges are found not to be the town's, the account will be reimbursed. Board members said that process is required by law and asked the Clerk to review the town’s credit-card policy regarding permitted uses and controls.
Members agreed to add credit-card policy language to future agenda discussion to ensure controls and responsibilities are clear, particularly after noting repeated incidents of fraudulent activity on business cards held by one member.
Next steps: the Clerk will review the current policy and prepare recommended language or procedural changes for board consideration.
