Salem Lakes EDC authorizes formal SWOT analysis, sets workshop and timelines

EDC member Jeff Albrecht explained the analysis and proposed a short timeline of targeted tasks: compile baseline data, solicit individual member SWOT reflections, assemble a draft, invite stakeholder input (including planning staff, business owners and community groups), and prepare a near-final draft for committee review and presentation to the Village Board. "The SWOT analysis gives the EDC a shared fact based understanding of where our village stands today and what factors will shape future economic development," Albrecht said.
Members discussed coordinating with the planning commission and using recent sources of local data, including a county housing analysis (Von Briesen) and a parks commission survey. The committee emphasized aligning SWOT findings with the Village's 2050 comprehensive plan and flagged infrastructure (notably water on the Route 83 corridor) and funding as priority areas for the analysis.
A motion to authorize the EDC to develop a formal SWOT analysis, establish roles and timelines, and prepare an action plan for the Village Board was moved and approved by voice vote. Albrecht agreed to collect member inputs by specified dates and compile the draft materials for committee review; staff (Sarah) will assist with posting and logistics. The committee discussed outreach logistics and legal posting rules for workshops and agreed to a provisional workshop on July 29 at 6:00 p.m. pending venue confirmation.
Next steps: members will submit initial SWOT inputs to the lead author, staff will confirm workshop logistics and Von Briesen/county housing study availability, and the EDC will refine the action plan for presentation to the Village Board and inclusion in 2027 budget discussions.
