At the July 24 Mackinac County Board of Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Austin Kimberling moved, with a second from Commissioner John Kling, to convert an animal-shelter part-time temporary position into a full-time position. During discussion, County Clerk Hillary Vowell advised the board that under current practice a part-time employee may work up to 34 hours per week and still be classified as part time.
Board members reviewed union-contract guidelines related to part-time and full-time status. After that clarification, Commissioner Kimberling rescinded his motion; the board left the position as part time with hours permitted up to 34 per week. No salary or budget amendment was approved at the meeting regarding the position.
The exchange was procedural and did not include a roll-call vote to change the position’s classification. The issue remains available for a future agenda if the board chooses to revisit staffing or budget changes.
