Kenowa Hills board rates superintendent “Effective” after closed-session evaluation

The Kenowa Hills Public Schools Board of Education on Dec. 11, 2023, voted unanimously to assign Superintendent Hopkins an overall educator-effectiveness rating of “Effective” for the 2023–24 school year. The board reconvened from a closed session and approved the rating by a 7-0 vote.
Member Turner moved to assign the overall rating, and Member LaBotz seconded the motion; the board recorded the action as Report #23-062. The board had earlier adjourned to closed session under Michigan statute M.C.L.15.268§8(a) to conduct the superintendent evaluation (Report #23-061); the closed session began at 6:33 p.m. and the board reconvened to open session at 9:54 p.m.
The action followed routine business earlier in the meeting: the board approved a modified agenda by a 7-0 vote after a motion from Member Courtade, and it approved the consent agenda — including the Nov. 27, 2023 regular meeting minutes — by a 7-0 vote. No public comments were offered during the public-comment period.
President Hart opened the special meeting at 6:03 p.m. for the purpose of conducting the annual superintendent evaluation. The publicly posted minutes note the statutory basis for the closed-session review and list the recorded motions, seconds and unanimous vote to assign the “Effective” rating.
The board adjourned at 10:09 p.m. Daniell e M. S. Roberts, secretary, signed the minutes.
