Laconia schedules Feb. 9 public hearing on NHDES milfoil grant; city share estimated at $52,407.81

The Laconia City Council on Jan. 26 advanced a first reading of Resolution 2026-02, which accepts a 2026 NHDES Exotic Aquatic Plant Control Grant to fund aquatic plant control work in Paugus Bay and Lake Opechee.
Meeting materials list a total project cost of $114,200, with the NHDES grant covering $57,100. The City’s share is $57,100; the Lake Opechee Preservation Association (LOPA) offered to reimburse $4,692.19 for remediation work in Lake Opechee, reducing the City’s net cost to $52,407.81 (an increase of $7,407.81 from the prior year appropriation). Staff recommended moving the grant acceptance and appropriation request to a public hearing, and Councilor Hildreth moved to schedule a public hearing for Feb. 9, 2026; the motion passed unanimously (6-0).
Staff indicated the City’s share would be expended from the FY27 Administration Non-Departmental budget. The Council waived full reading and moved the first reading by title; no substantive public opposition was recorded during the meeting.
