Joey Ammons, chair of the newly created Public Education Injury Compensation Board, told the committee the board has hired a third‑party administrator (TPA) to handle claims as the program prepares to provide workers’ compensation benefits to educators starting Oct. 1.
Ammons said the TPA contract includes a contractual base—about $600,000 per year covering roughly 350 claims—and the vendor’s proposal scales upward if claims exceed that baseline. The vendor’s estimate, based on other states, suggests the board might see between 1,500 and 2,000 claims annually, but Ammons emphasized that estimate is uncertain and actual claims could be much lower.
The board solicited bids and received two responses to an RFP that was distributed broadly; Ammons said the first contract is for claims administration and another contract for outside legal counsel is expected in the coming months to handle appeals.
Ammons also noted the program covers about 104,000 teachers, educators and adult bus drivers in the state, and said the board is working to be operational by Oct. 1. He said the board hired an executive director and that members of the five‑person board are finalizing vendor arrangements and preparing for implementation.
