Planning director reports fewer code cases, lower inspections and continued permit intake in January

The Emerald Isle Planning Department reported lower inspection and enforcement totals for January while permit intake continued, Planning Director John told the board.
John said the department processed roughly 72 zoning permit applications "taken in" during January and that the town collected $6,782 in zoning fees that month. He cautioned that the department's software logs "taken in" permits separately from "issued" permits and invited board members to request a detailed breakdown if they wanted specific counts.
John described code enforcement workloads as improved: open enforcement cases have fallen to about 33 from roughly 63 when he started in September, and five cases closed during January. He also reported 11 inspections in January compared with 43 the same month last year.
A board member asked about permit turnaround time. A planning staff member who processes permits said, "We usually get them processed, I would say, within a week, mostly," and that simpler permits often clear in three to four days. John added that the planning department consists of three staff members'the planning director, a permit technician (Mikey), and an assistant town planner, Greg Hayes'and that, as of December, the department began accepting CAMA minor exemptions and associated code-enforcement duties.
John said the number of permits and inspections can vary with weather and seasonal patterns and that the department will continue to report monthly totals. He encouraged residents and permit applicants to contact the planning department for more detailed breakdowns of permit types.
