The Garden City Traffic Commission on May 7 approved a series of local traffic-safety and parking measures and reviewed the status of several long-running projects.
The commission approved updated signage and parking restrictions for Parking Field 8 behind Kings, Novita and Waterzooi and authorized follow-up on Parking Field 6 to add or reassign Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) spaces and review permit usage. The commission also approved requests to refresh line striping on Rockaway and Stewart Avenues and to add street lighting at the northeast corner of Hilton Avenue and Seventh Street; the commission deferred a pedestrian signal at Rockaway and Stewart and asked Nassau County to refresh striping.
Officials approved a temporary No Turn on Red restriction at Edgemere Road where construction at the Edgemere Firehouse has altered traffic patterns. New-business petitions included a request for speed humps on Garden Street, which the commission deferred pending additional traffic data, and a parking review behind Revel and Muse (Parking Field 9E), which was deferred.
Status updates noted that the Board of Trustees previously approved converting North Avenue to a one-way outbound configuration on Jan. 22, 2026; as of the May 7 meeting the traffic work was substantially completed but repaving from Kilburn to Nassau remained to be done.
The meeting also recorded routine county-coordinated items — including ongoing traffic-signal and reconstruction studies on Clinton Road and Merillon Avenue — and deferred other petitions pending resident petitions or further county review. The commission approved the minutes of March 5, 2026 and closed the session with direction for staff to follow up on the approved and deferred items.
