Appling County approves low bids for LMIG roadwork, landfill shelter, litter pickup and custodial services; tax assessor appointments confirmed

Appling County commissioners on Feb. 1 unanimously approved a slate of contract awards and three appointments to the county Board of Tax Assessors.

For the 2022 LMIG road improvement program, commissioners accepted the low bid from Georgia Asphalt Producers of $1,385,753.50 on a motion by Commissioner Sarah Boatright seconded by Commissioner Daryl Edwards. The board also awarded the landfill storage shelter contract to J M Miles Construction for $39,400 (motion by Commissioner Boatright, seconded by Commissioner Doug Harris). A litter pickup contract meeting bid specifications was awarded to Smith Cleaning for $56,334.40 after a Crosby Lawn Maintenance bid was disqualified for not meeting specifications (motion by Commissioner Daryl Edwards, seconded by Commissioner Doug Harris). Commissioners approved custodial services for the Ag Center from Smith Cleaning Services at a rate of $175 for regular cleaning and $500 for special deep cleaning (motion by Commissioner Theodore Wilkerson, seconded by Commissioner Doug Harris).

Separately, on motions by Commissioner Sarah Boatright seconded by Commissioner Theodore Wilkerson, the board voted unanimously to appoint Roger Branch and Elvira Russell to six-year terms on the Appling County Board of Tax Assessors (March 1, 2022'Feb. 28, 2028) and Verlene Moody to a three-year term (March 1, 2022'Feb. 28, 2025). The board recorded unanimous votes for each contract and appointment; no member voted against or abstained. One bid (Crosby Lawn Maintenance, $57,253.86) was disqualified from the litter pickup award for failing to meet the bid specifications.
