Labette County commissioners approve juvenile justice grants, bridge inspections and routine payments

The Labette County Board of Commissioners met at 9:00 a.m. on March 10, 2025, in the Commission Room and unanimously approved a series of grants, contracts and routine financial items.
Commissioners voted to authorize three Kansas Department of Corrections grant documents: a FY 2026 Juvenile Comprehensive Plan grant application for $402,077.55; KDOC Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JCAB) grant approval forms for $135,226.36; and a FY 2026/2027 Reinvestment Grant with expenditures of $108,182.00. Commissioner Terry Weidert moved each authorization and Commissioner Tom Barrett seconded; each motion passed by recorded vote: Tom Barrett (Yes), Terry Weidert (Yes), Vincent B. Schibi (Yes).
The board also authorized a contract enabling CFS Engineers to perform the 2025 Biennial Routine Bridge Inspections covering 84 R.S. System bridges and 200 off-system bridges at $99 per bridge, a total of $28,116 payable from the county's Special Bridge fund. Chairman Vincent B. Schibi moved the authorization and Commissioner Terry Weidert seconded; the board recorded a unanimous vote. The agenda states the inspections will comply with Kansas Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration requirements.
Other approved items included a $3,375 expenditure to scan road index records, acceptance of a Public Works surplus-property list, and the passage of Resolution 2025-18-L allocating $3,000 to the Rural Opportunity Zone. The board approved routine accounts-payable batches: check numbers 36962–36963 for $174,984.28 (2024) and check numbers 36859–36961 for $291,463.50 (2025). All these motions passed unanimously with the three commissioners voting Yes.
Several executive sessions for attorney consultation were also held during the meeting; the board announced each executive session and reconvened on the public record. The meeting adjourned at 12:08 p.m.; the next regular meeting is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2025.
