Nunn trustees approve asbestos abatement contract; 11-day shutdown expected to begin April 24

NUNN — The Town of Nunn Board of Trustees voted unanimously April 2 to award an asbestos abatement contract for Town Hall and adjacent spaces, authorizing a quote of $58,850 and scheduling an expected 11-day shutdown beginning Friday, April 24.

The motion to proceed was made by Trustee Smith and recorded as seconded by Trustees Buxton and Kelly. A roll-call vote recorded Trustees Smith, Kelly, Kaus, Asher, McSwain and Buxton as voting yes; Mayor Jordan Cable was noted as absent. The board moved on the contractor selection under agenda item "Review asbestos abatement bids." The special meeting was called to order by Pro tem Kaus at 5:00 p.m. and adjourned at 5:13 p.m.

Board members reviewed four bids for the abatement work, which ranged from $56,000 to $161,000. Officials recorded that the work will require an 11-day shutdown; an expected start date was provided as April 24. Trustees were told that the abatement scope varies by room: some areas will require full removal of contents and full abatement, while others will receive partial removal.

On funding, the record shows $56,000 was already included in the grant for the work and that an additional $9,000 was identified; the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) was described as contributing $29,000, and the board noted $28,000 could be made available by eliminating exterior painting of Town Hall. The record also states that CDBG will not cover ceiling replacement costs in the administration office or shop office because those areas are not public spaces.
