EDA updates: events, HUB33, scholarship committee and internships discussed

At its Feb. 5 meeting the King and Queen County Economic Development Authority received routine and program updates from staff and volunteers.
Erin Lazar reported HUB33 payments are current and thanked OfficeRnD for improving the payment process; she said a new workspace rental is in place at HUB33. Lazar listed a schedule of VA250 events beginning Feb. 25, 2026 with a Ken Burns film screening at the library, noted the library's participation in Historic Garden Week and said the county Garden Tour will be April 24 in the Historic Bruington Area. She also announced the County's "Fair of the Past" on May 16, 2026, co-hosted with the Tavern Museum, marking the county's 335th birthday and the Tavern's 25th anniversary.
Kelly Evko updated the authority on EDA priorities including marketing support for businesses, pursuing a VA Housing grant, and coordinating with VA Internship to bring interns to small businesses (targeting firms with 150 employees or fewer). Evko said a VA Internship representative will visit Fulcrum; members discussed forging a relationship between Fulcrum and local schools to create pathways for technical students and retain talent in the county. Evko also reported that the project's checklist shows some completed items and others in progress.
On scholarship business, Evko said six applications were received for the Marketing & Social Media Support Scholarship and proposed a review committee; Chairman George Longest and Melinda Coleman volunteered. The EDA agreed to reschedule the July meeting from July 2 to July 9, 2026; a revised calendar will be provided at the next meeting. The meeting adjourned at 11:41 a.m.
