Council backs one-year extension for solid-waste contract while conducting a review

The town's current solid-waste contract is set to expire June 30, 2026 after two five-year extensions. Public Works staff told council the contract needs a nine-month review of rates, fuel premiums, household counts and tipping fees before a longer-term procurement decision.

Public Works recommended a one-year extension to provide time for a full analysis; staff said the contractor preferred a longer renewal but agreed to a one-year extension if the council opted for that. Councilors cited neighboring localities that had recently changed contractors for cost savings and asked staff to analyze whether a short-term extension or competitive procurement would be in the town's financial interest.

Council also discussed the prospect of a single-point recycling center and whether eliminating curbside recycling could lower costs; staff noted those options require operational planning and public outreach. Council members supported the recommendation to extend one year while staff prepares a detailed analysis, including updated commercial fee schedules and enforcement options for delinquent commercial accounts.
