Colonial Beach council appoints three to planning commission

The Colonial Beach Town Council voted Oct. 15 to appoint three residents to the Planning Commission, filling two unexpired terms and one full term that begins Dec. 1.
Anne Marie Yurstow, Lauren Adams and Bill Malone each spoke briefly before the council. Yurstow described planning experience and community ties, saying she moved to Colonial Beach in 2023 and that “I feel like I have a lot of good experience that I can offer the town.” Adams, a construction and site‑work professional, said she applied to help guide growth and “protect what we’ve had growing here while also building for the future.” Malone, who told the council he has decades of planning‑commission experience and 40 years in the Air Force, said he would bring veteran experience in ordinance writing and general‑plan updates.
Council member Larson moved the appointments and read the motion that placed Adams and Yurstow in unexpired seats and scheduled Malone’s term to start Dec. 1 and run through 2029. The motion was seconded and approved by the council.
Council and staff emphasized the requirement—set in planning commission bylaws—that commissioners complete the Virginia planners certification program; the town will reimburse training and travel expenses for the course. Applicants confirmed they are willing and able to complete the multi‑week training.
The appointments restore staggered terms on the commission: two seats will expire Jan. 1, 2027, and the Dec. 1 appointment will run through Jan. 1, 2029, restoring the commission’s intended rotation.
