Bottineau council passes routine business items, denies sidewalk removal request and declines a property purchase

At its Dec. 2 meeting the Bottineau City Council addressed a series of routine and administrative items: it approved the consent agenda (which included a raffle permit for DCB-Logrollers) and voted to pay listed bills.
The Street Committee recommended denying a property owner’s request to remove the south portion of a sidewalk at 1035 Elm Street; Council member Stewart moved to deny the request, Mehlhoff seconded and the motion carried. The committee asked that the sidewalk be finished so it leads to a crosswalk.
On a previously tabled item, Attorney Benson advised the council that annexation alone does not make the city liable for flooding and noted the drainage ditch on Lot 24 of the Preserve was installed by the developer without an easement. Benson recommended against purchasing the lot and the council left the purchase alone.
The council also heard a police report from Sheriff Toftland, who said staffing will be back to full strength soon with Terry Sand returning and another deputy hire pending; he also noted recent snow-removal enforcement and towing/ticketing activity. The Superintendent reported a public input meeting on Jan. 8, 2025 to discuss the lead/copper water line ruling; time will be announced.
Council member Getzlaff moved to advertise the 1998 two‑wheel‑drive green four‑door pickup for sale by bids, Lauckner seconded; the council carried the motion and will open bids at the Jan. 6 meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
The council recorded roll-call unanimous votes on several items; where committees recommended no action, the council followed the committee advice.
