Cimarron council roundup: bank branch concern, public works praise, Elk statue site, and multiple NMDOT resolutions

At the Village of Cimarron council meeting on Feb. 19, Mayor Eloy Brazil reported that a local bank branch will close and said he will seek a meeting with bank officials; he encouraged residents to send letters to advocate for keeping the branch in town.
Councilors praised public works for recent road clearing and tree trimming along Highway 64; the minutes record appreciation from Councilors Ernie LeDoux and Miriah LeDoux. Mayor Brazil also reported the public works department will perform some water meter replacements in the coming months.
On public art, the council selected a site for an Elk art statue. Mayor Eloy Brazil favored placing the statue in the park by the pavilion, citing existing security cameras; Councilor Ernie LeDoux expressed concern that an alternate site across Highway 64 could be subject to vandalism. The council voted 4-0 to place the statue in the park by the pavilion.
The council approved several NMDOT-related resolutions: Resolution 2025-010 (NMDOT L400658 time extension), Resolution 2025-011 (NMDOT COOP for miscellaneous road improvements), Resolution 2025-013 (NMDOT TPF for 9th Street), and Resolution 2025-014 (NMDOT hardship auction participation), all by 4-0 votes. The council tabled Resolution 2025-012 (NMDOT MAP) so the location and scope of that project could be identified and will revisit it on a future agenda.
Financial housekeeping included approval of the check report and deposit register for Jan. 3–Feb. 14, 2025, and payment of a $542.43 invoice from NM Local Government Law Firm; both financial items passed 4-0. Clerk-Administrator Shawn Jeffrey said a water compliance violation was issued because an Excel file was not provided with a PDF to NMED.
The council adjourned at 7:00 p.m.; Councilor Ernie LeDoux moved to adjourn and Councilor Colin Tawney seconded.
