Council approves $125,000 filter-media replacement contract for water plant

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. — The Chincoteague Town Council authorized a water-plant filter-media replacement contract Jan. 16 after staff recommended awarding the specialty work to Somerset Well Drilling.
Mike Talbert said the sand filter media in a large treatment vessel had not been replaced in many years, forcing more frequent backwashing to maintain system pressures. The town solicited bids for the specialty work and received a single quote from Somerset Well Drilling for $125,000; the budget had $120,000 for the item in FY25 capital improvements. "We had 1 quote, and that was from Somerset Well Drilling, for a $125,000," Talbert said.
Councilors moved and seconded a motion to proceed with the contract award; the council approved the award by voice vote. Talbert confirmed the funding will come from the water department's FY25 capital-improvements account.
What's next: Town staff will execute the contract and schedule the work; because the replacement is a specialty job, staff indicated they expect to proceed promptly once paperwork is complete.
