Council hears early outreach about Hondas interest in renaming stretch of Highway 119
Summary
The chamber notified the town that Honda may seek to rename a section of Highway 119; Brad (S2) told councilors the town would need to pass a supporting resolution and coordinate with DOT, emergency responders, postal service and affected property owners before any formal request proceeds.

Town staff told the Swepsonville council that the local chamber informed the town Honda is evaluating a request to rename a stretch of Highway 119.
"Honda has started evaluating or giving some consideration to that," Brad (S2) said, adding that because most roads in town are DOT-controlled the town would need to adopt a resolution showing support if Honda moves forward. Brad said the chamber asked whether the council would be open to such a request and that the town must factor in fire-department response, county coordination and postal-service implications before any final action.
Council members raised pragmatic concerns about how many addresses and residents would be affected. One member suggested a narrower plan B that limits changes to the segment adjacent to the Honda plant to reduce the number of people required to update addresses.
Why it matters: renaming a DOT-controlled highway segment can affect emergency response routing, postal addresses, private delivery services and online mapping databases. Town staff said private carriers and third-party apps often lag when roads are renamed, producing temporary delivery issues.
Next steps: staff will gather more information from the chamber and Honda and estimate the number of affected addresses before any formal resolution or DOT request is considered.
