Fire, EMS and public works report: hydrants pass testing; EMS gets ambulance grant

Fire Chief Cris Coca told the council that hydrant testing is complete and that all 15 hydrants passed inspection; he also reported seven fire calls in the last month and thanked JJ Martinez for mowing near hydrants.

EMS Director Nate Lay reported 212 calls year-to-date for 2024, said all students in a recent EMT class except one passed (the remaining student will retest), and said continuing-education classes are planned for the fall. Lay said the village received official notification of a 75%/25% ambulance grant and that a new unit will cost about $220,000. He also told the council that the PRC has transitioned to NMDOT regulations.

Administrator Shawn Jeffrey reported that Maniscalco has been contacted to send a trailer to pick up white goods at the solid-waste station and requested the council begin compiling a list of surplus items to clear the public-works yard. Mayor Eloy Brazil reported public-works staff have been repairing water leaks on Euclid Street and that the pavilion is seeing heavy use by residents and tourists; he suggested asking the high-school welding class to fabricate rail piping at the cemetery to deter motorists from driving over graves and asked public works to blade a west-side area to provide parking.

What’s next: Staff plan to schedule interviews for vacant positions and may call a special meeting to complete hires; Public Works has planned follow-up tasks for pavement work and surplus disposition, and EMS will proceed with grant implementation steps for the ambulance purchase.
