Atlantic Beach pauses boardwalk work, schedules March 7 special meeting

The council directed staff to advise the project architects and engineers to stop work to prevent further billing while the town develops updated cost estimates. Public Works Director Marc Schulze was asked to prepare a remodeling estimate for the Circle bathhouse and Town Manager John O'Daniel said he would contact property owner Fred Bunn about a proposed wastewater connection for the facility.
Council discussion emphasized cost control and clearer early involvement by council members. Mayor Pro Tem Austin Waters said he wants the boardwalk emphasized in future work, noting, “I am not proud of the boardwalk and I want to be,” urging staff to pursue grants or architect work that can be funded.
Staff noted the Town previously pursued PARTF grant scoring changes but said the timeline this year does not allow sufficient improvements to raise the project's score. Council agreed the pause will let staff provide updated cost estimates and determine grant opportunities before resuming design work.
A special meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 7 at 9:00 a.m. in the Emergency Operations Center, 125 West Fort Macon Road, where council may review revised designs and, if appropriate, act on funding or design approvals.
