Martin Board approves consent agenda, accepts coach resignation; administrators report book fair proceeds and facility updates

At its Oct. 20 meeting, the Martin Board of Education approved the consent agenda and accepted a resignation recommended by administration. President Teri Beilby moved to accept the consent agenda, Vice President V. Tuinstra supported the motion, and the board voted unanimously.
The administration recommended, and the board approved, the resignation of Charles Draper as 7th-grade boys basketball coach for the 2025-26 school year. President Beilby moved the personnel recommendation and Trustee C. Oxender seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
In administration reports, Principal Becca Lynema said the first quarter concluded successfully and that "The Elementary Book Fair raised $5,325.48 to support the new library." Lynema also reported PBIS celebrations at the elementary and middle schools, a Middle School field trip to Gull Meadows Farm, and that the high school band earned multiple awards and performed a Season in Review concert. She said the leadership team met with the Martin Fire Department to review and update district safety procedures and noted the new MPS Connect newsletter has reached over 4,200 views. Lynema listed upcoming events including NHS Induction on Oct. 29, an Elementary Halloween Parade on Oct. 30, an NHS Blood Drive on Nov. 3 and Family Math Night on Nov. 13.
Superintendent Samantha Ball provided facilities updates, saying, "The Clipper room is in remodel; it's going to be smaller now however it will be a much more usable space." She added the district has added a band practice space and an office for the band director, and that cafeteria flooring will be installed over the Christmas break. Ball also raised the business functions meeting date change to Nov. 17 at 4:30 p.m. with a bond tour at 5:30 p.m., and discussed the superintendent evaluation process for 2026.
There were no public comments. The board concluded with brief member remarks and adjourned at 6:24 p.m.
