At its May meeting, the Livingston Board of Education adopted a resolution asking the governor and state legislature to take immediate and long‑term action to ease rapidly rising health‑care costs for public employees.
The resolution, which board members read into the record, describes "double‑digit increases" in premiums year over year and cites a Treasury Department analysis projecting continued increases for 2027. It notes a 31.9% premium increase that took effect in January 2026 and says that, over the preceding five years, cumulative premium growth has strained district budgets and threatened programs and services.
"Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Livingston Board of Education in the County of Essex calls upon the governor and state legislature to provide immediate short‑term relief from the unsustainable increased health care costs experienced by school districts in recent years," the resolution states. The board directed staff to forward copies of the resolution to the governor, state legislative leaders, the state treasurer and the New Jersey School Boards Association.
Vote and outcome: The resolution was put to a roll‑call vote and carried by the board. The roll call in the meeting transcript records board members voting in the affirmative during the motion sequence.
