Historic-design review requested for proposed Rolex-style archway at 28 Newtown Lane

The Zoning Board of Appeals on July 10 kept the public hearing open for a proposal by 26 Newtown Lane LLC to install a freestanding archway topped by a watch-face sign at 28 Newtown Lane and referred the matter to the village’s historic-preservation/design-review board for comment.
Jamieson McWilliams, representing the applicant and Adam Miller Group, described the proposal as an archway with a watch face mounted above it. The board noted the property is identified as a historic landmark and several members said the archway could block the view of the historic building and represents a substantial increase in height, nearly 40% above the code-allowed maximum for freestanding signs.
One board member said the structure “creates an undesirable look” and recommended the board seek the historic-preservation board’s opinion; the ZBA agreed to adjourn the hearing until that review is complete. McWilliams said the applicant had received at least one email of neighbor support and that she would submit it for the record.
The board also asked staff to coordinate with the Historic Preservation/Design Review Board and scheduled the matter to return after those comments are received.
