Board member’s no vote and public questions highlight split over strategic plan content

A public commenter raised questions about the board's recent approval of the district's five-year strategic plan and asked board members to explain why two members voted against it.

Andrew Lehman, identified from the meeting sign-up, told the board he had watched the prior meeting and was "curious" why two board members opposed the plan. He said he had concerns with wording in Pillar 1 related to "students' climate" and in Pillar 2 related to "employee retention and engagement."

The board president, who did not give a personal name in the public record, acknowledged voting against the plan and said his objections were not a surprise to fellow board members. "I don't view that public education — our purpose is to put in our strategic plan about teacher compensation. I believe that's separate from educating students," the board president said, explaining one reason for his vote. He also said there were "pieces of that strategic plan that I was not comfortable with," and that he and another board member had discussed those concerns for months.

The board president emphasized that the strategic plan nonetheless passed and will guide district actions: "The plan passed… The board as a whole voted for it, and that's the direction the district will be going and moving forward."
