Flying Fortress Parkway nears paving; city sets Oct. 5 ribbon-cutting

City engineer Robert updated the council on the Flying Fortress Parkway project, reporting that crews have installed roughly 260 of an estimated 320 concrete-box-culvert sections, completed most underground work, and placed aggregate base on large portions of the corridor. "This project started 2 months and 10 days ago ... and in that time, we have all of the underground done except for those remaining two box culverts," Robert said, adding that paving of one-half mile of Airway and the first concrete pours on Flying Fortress would occur in the coming weeks.
Robert said the contractor's pace has been "absolutely amazing," and barring a major storm event the project should be ready in time for the planned opening. He noted that corrugated metal pipes, conduits and subgrade work are largely finished and that the contractor plans staged concrete pours starting next week. The city also plans a ribbon-cutting on Oct. 5.
Councilors praised the coordination among the construction manager, contractor and city staff. Robert said an upcoming (zero-cost) change order will appear on the August 4 council agenda. No vote was required for the update; council thanked staff for the progress.
