Library exploratory committee formed; commission hears updates on village redevelopment, open-space bond, firehouse and golf course

At the June 23 meeting the commission was briefed that a library exploratory committee has been formed to study options for town library facilities. Committee members said the exploratory group plans to visit other libraries, assess what services those libraries offer and consider whether renovation of existing town-owned buildings or a new building on town or private property is appropriate.
A commissioner described the committee's charge: "They have to look at the current libraries, what could be renovated in the current libraries instead of a new library, or property the town owns, property that the town doesn't own for potential sites if you were gonna build a new library," and staff said the exploratory committee will meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays and is expected to report before any building committee is formed.
Separately, commission members received updates on village redevelopment work: staff reported surveys for Broome Road and a parcel fronting Broome, and said an appraisal for a potential acquisition was underway. A commissioner noted a $5,000,000 open-space bond was approved for land purchases that could affect planning priorities.
Members also discussed the firehouse project process and timing. Commissioners said the firehouse proposal must proceed through the selectmen and board of finance before a town meeting and referendum; a $15,000,000 construction figure was mentioned and commissioners asked staff for supporting estimates and pre-construction cost analyses before the town proceeds to referendum steps.
Finally, staff said a golf-course review period was ending and a final report was expected. The meeting closed after a motion to adjourn was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will forward copies of the library committee charge and redevelopment materials to commissioners and will share any golf-course and firehouse updates when available.
