The Caroline County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on June 9 to decline state funding for the General Assembly’s optional 2% bonus for Compensation Board‑funded employees.
Staff presented five options with estimated county costs: (1) state‑funded employees only (no county cost), (2) all Comp Board and locally funded constitutional officers employees (county cost $99,272.38), (3) all full‑time and part‑time county employees ($366,833.84), (4) constitutional officer positions plus a $500 bonus for full‑time county employees and $250 for part‑time employees (estimated county cost $220,272.38), and (5) decline state funding (no bonus). The state’s reimbursement for the optional bonus was shown as $62,545.86.
Sheriff Moser told the Board the Sheriff’s Office supported declining state funding, noting the County recently implemented a pay scale increase for public safety positions. Supervisor Reginald L. Underwood moved to adopt Option 5 to decline state funding and direct staff to send a letter to state legislators objecting to partial bonus mandates; Supervisor Jeffrey S. Black seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The Board’s action means eligible employees will not receive the optional 2% bonus funded through the state for the county’s Compensation Board positions; the County will instead send the requested letter to legislators.
