Councilmember Shanae Darby introduced a resolution May 6 to establish a permanent reparations implementation and oversight committee to develop an implementation plan for recommendations produced by a previous reparations task force.
Darby said the reparations task force had been created during a prior council president’s term and that some members of the present council, including Colby Owens, served on that previous committee. "Outside of that, these recommendations have just been sitting there. Right? We haven't been working on them," Darby said, describing the impetus for a standing oversight body. Under the proposed resolution the council would appoint five members to a subcommittee; the subcommittee would select its chair and review the previous recommendations and work with counsel and the administration on implementation.
Darby asked whether members of the public wished to comment on the item; the clerk reported no raised hands for public comment on that resolution at the intergovernmental committee meeting. No formal vote was taken in committee on the proposal.
