Wilmington committee to accept $5,000 grant for African American historic-sites map

Chair and Councilmember Shanae Darby introduced a resolution May 6 asking the council to accept $5,000 from the Greater Wilmington Convention and Visitors Bureau to create both a physical and an online map of historic African American sites in Wilmington.
The project, Darby said, has been under development for about two years with community meetings, presentations, photographers and work with the local historical museum to document sites and gather images. "The visitor bureau... they're willing to give us $5,000 for this project," Darby said, adding the funds would help produce a map and support tours highlighting the significance of the African American community in the city.
Darby said the resolution will be placed on the City Council agenda for a vote at the May 7 council meeting at 6:30 p.m. There was no public comment on the grant at the intergovernmental committee meeting.
If approved by the full council, the grant would fund continued documentation and the creation of public-facing materials designed to make local African American history more accessible to residents and visitors.
