Bismarck board finds social-studies outcomes are making ‘reasonable progress’ after presentation of results

The Bismarck Public School Board voted May 12 that the district is making reasonable progress on R2.1 (social studies), following a presentation by district staff.
Dr. Ben Johnson reported steady improvements across grade levels, citing elementary proficiency at 89.7%, middle school at 78.6% and high school at 72.5%. He connected gains to the district’s implementation of a guaranteed viable curriculum and literacy-aligned instruction. Johnson also reported a very high civics-exam pass rate (cited as 99.9% in presentation), while noting a small number of students are exempted through alternate assessments.
Board member Mr. Lee asked whether a 70% threshold on the North Dakota civics exam is required to graduate; Johnson confirmed that a score of 70% is the state-standard passing threshold and exceptions apply for some special-education accommodations.
Miss Peterson moved to find R2.1 is making reasonable progress; Miss Presky seconded the motion. The board recorded unanimous support and the motion passed.
The board’s determination is procedural under the monitoring report: it does not change curriculum requirements immediately but directs staff to continue implementation and report results in governance reports the board will monitor going forward.
