Mackinac County Board allocates $25,000 for ice-storm cleanup as National Guard aids Island

The Mackinac County Board of Commissioners on April 10 approved a $25,000 allocation to a special line item for cleanup costs from a recent ice storm, with commissioners noting most expenses should be eligible for state or federal reimbursement.
Temporary Equalization Director Dulcee Ranta reported that the 2026 equalization roll is balanced and ready for sales studies, then Emergency Manager Mike Kasper briefed the board on storm response. "We bounced back from the power outages due to the ice storm," said Mike Kasper, who added that the National Guard is heading to Mackinac Island to assist with cleanup and that the county will begin paperwork to seek reimbursement for expenses.
E911 Coordinator Bryce Tracy said the emergency response in the area was strong: "The emergency response was amazing in the area after the storm," he said. Commissioner Judy St. Louis-Scott thanked county emergency staff by name, saying Mackinac County was "blessed to have them working for us."
Commissioner Austin Kimberling moved to allocate $25,000 to a special storm-cleanup line item; Commissioner Judy St. Louis-Scott seconded and the motion passed on a roll-call vote with Kimberling, Kling, Patrick, Schroeder and St. Louis-Scott voting yes.
The board emphasized that the allocation is intended to cover immediate costs while the county pursues reimbursements from higher levels of government. The board did not specify an exact reimbursement timetable or the amount expected to be reimbursed.
The meeting record shows follow-up items for staff to continue documentation and claims for reimbursement; no additional funding commitments were made at the meeting.
